How to get free fruit!

September 8, 2009

Got your attention with the word “free”?  That’s right, this is a sample of some of the fruit that we’ve managed to get for free.  I’ll tell you how.  My very clever and beautiful girlfriend decided to put a post on Craigslist that goes as follows – ” I am looking for anyone who has extra fruit and no time to preserve it!!!! I make jams, jellies, sauces, chutneys etc and use them to feed my family all year long I would love to pick your fruit and bring you back half of the finished product for trade”  Believe it or not but we have got so many responses.  I guess there are so many people out there who just have a ton of fruit that goes to waste.  What an amazing idea!  Fully crediting Brandy for this one.  We’ve been making jams, tarts, pies and lots of it we’ve just been eating as is.  This has also lead us to reach out into our community and meet some new people and create some cool relationships.  We came across a lovely lady in Colwood who  has been on her property since she was a child.  She has a real sparkle in her eyes!  The property is amazing.  There are remnants of an Antique’s business that was run from her place by her mother that gives it real charm.  There are figs, blackberries, pears, apples, plums that  and she’s even got hops growing.  She’s given us permission to come back as often as we like during the fall season to gather as much as we like!  Amazing.

I’m pretty sure we have enough jam for two years now.  This is one more way that’s got us all doing something as a family and giving the young ones an insight to how we would love to see our world.  Reaching out and connecting with people over food, learning where food comes from and experiencing making something from scratch.  Go on and try it yourself!
